Red Ives Redd Counts
September 14-15, 2007

On the weekend of September 14th and 15th, Palouse Unit
members
traveled north to the Red Ives Ranger Station, a remote workstation located on
the banks of the St. Joe River in the Panhandle National Forest. During this annual
September trip Palouse Unit members help Forest Service biologists conduct bull
trout redd counts. After arriving at the workstation around dusk, we gathered
around a campfire where students had a chance to interact with Forest Service
biologists Tim Price, Lisa Hawdon, and technician Chris Conklin along with other
volunteers.
The next morning we received a briefing from forest fisheries biologist
Tim Price before breaking into pairs to search for redds in nine tributaries of
the St. Joe River. This year’s count was conducted in a unique collaborative
effort that included the North Idaho Flycasters angling group, Forest Service biologists, and PUAFS members. The group successfully counted bull
trout redds. Data is used by the Panhandle National Forest to monitor
endangered bull trout.
After working up an appetite from our long hikes, the Forest Service
provided a BBQ with food furnished by the North Idaho Flycasters. The trip was
enjoyed by all and allowed students a unique opportunity to work directly with
both professionals, and sportsmen while enjoying scenic north Idaho.
