An Overview of Forest Inventory Assessment

The purpose of this section of the class is to become familiar with the principals of basic sampling design methods as they are applied to forestry and other natural resource disciplines. The lectures, assignments, and labs in this section, will enable the student to achieve the following learning objectives:

  • Understand the forest inventory process

  • Understand sampling design terminology

  • Understand the difference between stratified, systematic, and simple random sampling

  • Describe other plot and sampling designs, such as that used by the Forest Inventory and Assessment (FIA) program

  • Understand the concepts of stand growth and describe different stand diameter distributions

  • Describe how to measure forest biomass
