Topic Summary: This section provides an introduction into the role of forest mensuration in Forest Management and Forest Science. We include a discussion of what makes a good field sheet and an introduction to species identification. The second week contains lectures outlining the principals of measurement in management and science.

Week 3 Sept 7th |
Topic Summary: This section provides an overview of what you need to know from mathematics to be a successful in a forestry career. We will include a brief look at statistics, trigonometry, and rates of change. We include a brief description of how to describe and display data and errors in graphs, pie charts, and in excel. We include an essential overview of trigonometric principals including the SOH, CAH, TOA rules and Pythagoras.
NOTE: No Class Monday 7th as UI is Closed for Labor Day Required Reading: Husch, Beers, and Kershaw pp 28-52

Topic Summary: This section provides information on essential individual plant measurements that you will need in a successful forestry career. This includes tree height measurements, diameters, crown conditions, and ages. We will also assess the rules associated with forking trees, in addition to non-tree measurements such as diameter at root collar

Topic Summary: This section provides information on
stand level metrics such as basal area and site indices. We also include
information on how to measure forest hydrology metrics and fuel loadings via
photo guides and Brown's line intercept method. Following this section we

Topic Summary: This section provides an overview on
why and how to conduct a forest inventory. We will include a brief overview
of the main methods used to sample data in a forest (this is provided in
detail in FOR 474). We will also evaluate how a tree grows and how we both
