1.1 FOR 426 Overview
Welcome! I love to teach this class -- Fire ecology is a fascinating topic which requires us to combine our understanding of physical, chemical and ecological principles together. One of my favorite things about it is learning from each of you, and helping you learn from each other. I look forward to engaging with you in our class discussions, and sharing our knowledge with each other.

During this lesson we will introduce the online classroom and investigate a few basic principles of fire as a chemical and physical process. We will also go over some concepts related to fuels and fire behavior. These ideas will serve as a framework for our investigation into the effects of individual fires and fire regimes on ecosystem components.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

   After completing this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Navigate around the online class room.

  • Be familiar with the course syllabus
  • Describe the different modes of heat transfer
  • Discuss the phases of combustion
