  FOR474: Course Overview

Print Print Version

Course at a Glance: Spring 2009

This course provides detail into how modern forest assessments are conducted, including how we map and monitoring a range of forest products and processes. The course is in two parts. In the first part a series of lecture (twice a week) describes the concepts and methods of forest monitoring. The second half of the course (after Spring break) involves a series of lectures with integrated labs that go over forest inventory and disturbance examples.  The group project will be to develop monitoring plans for use by the UI experiment Forest.

The major objectives for students to achieve by the end of this course are:

  1. Understand forest sampling methods and know when they are appropriate and their limitations
  2. Understand how to analyze forest monitoring data in order to make informed recommendations
  3. Understand the potential and limitations of Lidar
  4. Understand and be able to evaluate methods to map and monitor forest disturbance
  5. Develop and present forest monitoring plans
