Course
Goals
 This course introduces the student to applications
of GIS in fire ecology research and management. The course gives the
student insight in fire incident mapping, creation of fire
progression maps, GIS overlay analysis, fire severity assessments
using remote sensing, fire atlas data, the role of GIS in the Fire
Regime Condition Class (FRCC) concept and the National Fire Plan. We
read and discuss research papers related to GIS and fire research,
view demonstrations of GIS analysis techniques, engage in hands-on
exercises producing BARC maps, fuel model maps, analyze fire-atlas
data, and GIS overlay analysis of topography, vegetation and fire
perimeters.
Course Structure
As you can see from the Lesson Schedule,
this course is divided into 10 general topics. We will spend 1 week
on each topic. Each Lesson is divided into 1-2 modules. In each Lesson
you will find the following information:
- A list of learning objectives for the module to
let you know where you should be headed.
- Reading assignments and discussion topics.
- In most cases, a PowerPoint presentation.
- A demonstration, video clip or a hands-on GIS
lab exercise that includes a homework assignment.
- Submission of lab exercises, participation in
the threaded discussions and submission of a final project are
required components for completing this course.
