Who should
consider a career in rangeland management and ecology?
People who are intensely
intrigued by ecological processes and like grasslands or shrublands ecosystems should
consider a career in range management. The most basic skill of all range managers is a
solid understanding of ecology. How do soil characteristics affect plant growth? What
environmental factors affect sustainability of rangeland ecosystems? How does grazing or
fire affect plant communities? Ecology is the engine that range managers harness to
accomplish management goals such as: beautiful recreational scenery, sustainable and
productive livestock forage, clean and adequate water, and improved wildlife habitat.
Rangeland is a diverse and dynamic ecosystem that
produces a wide variety of products. Therefore, there are many
opportunities for range managers to specialize in the management
of land for specific uses. For example, some range managers
specialize in how to manipulate land to produce high quality and
abundant water. Others focus on wildlife or livestock production.
Still others specialize in sociology and work with humans who use
rangeland for recreation or preservation.
