General Information:
The University of Idaho has the only B.S. program in the
country focused on wildland fire. Jointly offered by the Department of
Rangeland Ecology and Management and the Department
of Forest Resources, this program is designed to
educate the fire professionals of the future. Graduates will be in demand
for leadership positions in federal and state government agencies,
non-profit organizations, consulting firms and other businesses. This demand
is expected to continue for decades to come. Graduates may work in fields
such as fuels management, fire prevention and suppression, fire management,
fire ecology and many other related fields. Students will learn about fire
ecology and fire management issues in forests, woodlands, shrublands and
grasslands, and how to address them proactively and effectively.
The University of Idaho has been a national leader in teaching fire
ecology, conducting fire research and educating practicing fire
professionals for over 30 years. The College of Natural Resources is one of
the best places to learn. We have great teachers, caring advisors,
internationally respected research and strong partnerships with fire
professionals.
The B.S. Degree in Fire Ecology and Management is a 128 credit degree
program. This degree program is the only B.S. program in the
country where students focus on wildland fire ecology and management. In
addition to designed to provide students with an in depth look at fire
ecology and management they are also provided a broad interdisciplinary
background in natural resource management.
Students pursuing a B.S. degree in Fire Ecology and Management must
receive a grade of C or better in the following indicator courses to
register for upper-division courses in the fire core (FOR 426, 427, 450, 451
and REM 459) and to graduate. :
- Math 143 - Pre-Calculus Algebra and Analytical Geometry
- Stat 251 - Principles of Statistics
- REM 244 - Wildland Fire Management
- For/REM 221 - Ecology
- FOR 274 or REM 357 - Forest Measurements & Inventory or
Rangeland and Riparian Habitat Assessment
To complete the B.S. Degree in Fire Ecology and Management students must
complete all required coursework listed below as well as at least 18 credits
in the general core requirements which equal at least 128 credit hours of
coursework. Students must also have at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA.
