Air Quality Educational Resources

The University of Idaho and the National Wildfire Coordinating Group's (NWCG) Smoke Committee (SmoC) have developed a range of educational materials to help further your knowledge of air quality and smoke management. These resources and their descriptions are listed below to help you choose which resource is right for you.
  • Online Tutorial- The online tutorial is designed for members of the fire community who are seeking an overview of air quality impacts and their affect on wildland fire management. The tutorial is comprised of several case studies demonstrating how air quality policies are affecting the use of wildland fire. Additionally, the tutorial contains a refresher course with modules providing introductory information about smoke impacts, air quality regulations, management techniques and communication.

  • Forestry 454- The College of Natural Resources Forestry 454 course is targeted at those who are working towards meeting GS 0401 standards and traditional CNR students. The purpose of Forestry 454 is to introduce participants to the field of air quality and smoke management. This course is part of both the Fire Ecology and Management Bachelors Degree and the Fire Ecology and Management Certificate Program.

  • Smokepedia- This interactive glossary of air quality terms will always be available in the top right corner of this website window. To search for a term, simply click on the Smokepedia link to bring up the glossary, where further information is given.

  • AQ Library- This page contains PDF links of several helpful air quality guides and links to related web sites, several of which were used in the development of this tutorial

 NWCG Smoke Committee

As of February 2009 The Fire Air Coordination Team (FACT) is now the National Wildfire Coordinating Groups (NWCG) Smoke Committee (SmoC). SmoC is an interagency team consisting of members from several federal and state agencies. The group works to address air quality issues relating to wildland fire and make information relating to these issues available to those working in wildland fire.
